Daily Analysis – Markets Drop on European Debt Fears

Equities China’s Shanghai Composite climbed 1%, as investors shrugged off the 8th increase in reserve requirements since October and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose .9%. Elsewhere in Asia the Nikkei fell .7% and the Kospi slipped .1%. European markets closed down, even as France and Germany posted strong GDP results which exceeded analyst estimates. The FTSE lost .3%, while the DAX dropped .6%, as ECB chairman, Trichet, urged Greece not to restructure its debt. US stocks fell, with the Dow down 100 points to 12596 and the Nasdaq down 1.2%. Tech shares led the declines, with significant losses in several big-name companies. Rambus tumbled 18% after an Appeals Court concluded the company destroyed documents Nasdaq Falls 1.2% regarding a patent infringement lawsuit. Nvidia dropped 11% on growth concerns while Yahoo fell 3.6%. Earnings Preview for J.C. Penney (JCP, M, JWN, DDS, KSS)

J.C. Penney (NYSE: JCP) is expected to announce its Q1 earnings results on Monday, May 16. Analysts are expecting earnings per share to stand at $0.25, the same level as in Q1 2010. The Street's estimate was lowered by $0.01 in the last seven days. Revenues are projected to be $3.95 billion, or 0.5% higher than in the same quarter a year ago. The company is a retailer, operating 1,108 J.C. Penney department stores in 49 states and Puerto Rico as of January 30, 2010. Its business consists of selling merchandise and services to consumers through its department stores and direct (Internet/catalog) channels. Looking ahead, earning per share is expected to skyrocket year-over-year in the upcoming quarter. For Q2, analysts expect J.C. Penney to post earnings per share of $0.21, or a 250% rise on a yearly basis. For the year as a whole, earnings per share should reach $2.04, or 28.3% higher than a year ago. Markets Markets closed lower after a volatile week marked by volatile prices of commodities and currencies, as investors wrestled with the of a worsening European debt crisis and a global economic slowdown. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 42.99 points this week, or 0.34 percent, to close at 12,595.75. On Friday, the blue-chip index sank 100.17 points, or 0.8 percent. The S&P 500 fell 2.43 points this week, or 0.2 percent, to close at 1,337.77. On Friday the S&P fell 10.88 points, or 0.8 percent. The Nasdaq rose 0.9 points or 0.03 percent this week, to close at 2,828.47. On Friday, the tech-heavy index fell 34.57 points, or 1.2 percent. Halozyme and ViroPharma in Licensing Deal; Allos Earnings Disappoint

Below is a look at some of the headlines for companies that made news in the healthcare sector on May 11, 2011. Shares of Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq:HALO) edged higher Wednesday after the company announced the signing of a worldwide exclusive licensing agreement for the use of rHuPH20 (recombinant human hyaluronidase) in the development of a subcutaneous formulation of Cinryze with ViroPharma Incorporated (Nasdaq:VPHM). Halozyme may receive up to $83 million, commencing with an upfront payment of $9 million and total potential future milestone payments of $74 million dependent upon the achievement of clinical and regulatory targets, plus a 10% royalty on future sales of the combination of Cinryze with rHuPH20. The license provides ViroPharma with exclusivity to C1 esterase inhibition and to the hereditary angioedema (HAE) indication, along with three additional orphan indications. Stocks After three positive sessions, US stocks succumbed to selling pressure and finished the day much lower. The S&P 500 led the declines as the index was down over 1.1% (15 points) to 1342, while the Nasdaq dropped 26 points to 2845. Specifically, the energy sector was the biggest loser as another selloff in Oil prices affected individual stocks. Elsewhere, European shares also fell, with the FTSE and DAX both shedding earlier gains to end in the red. European stocks were hit with news that the EU may need to inject further bailout funds to Greece and Portugal to limit the rise in their country’s sovereign debt. Looking ahead, stocks, especially technology names could be under pressure on Thursday, as Cisco delivered a worse than expected earnings forecast after the close of trading on Wednesday.
